Drilling Manager – oil/gas

Position Summary

Responsible for managing and executing all Company-operated oil and gas wells and/or heavy oil drilling operations. Supervises drilling staff and ensures compliance to all applicable EH&S policies and procedures.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensures that the drilling processes, procedures, and plans are in-place to facilitate knowledge transfer, maximize efficiency, and minimize
  • Negotiates joint venture drilling
  • Strives for continual performance improvement through knowledge management and application of new
  • Prepares well authorizations.
  • Ensure programs, program amendments, and dispensations to policy are prepared on schedule and are adequately risk assessed. Promotes and encourages appropriate risk
  • Provides cost control for drilling, completions, and
  • Ensures drilling operations follow Company’s health, safety, and environmental protection
  • Coaches and mentors Drilling staff to ensure appropriate development and career
  • Provides engineering technical leadership and expertise for total well planning and design, cost estimation and risk analysis, and operation support to field
  • Reviews engineering studies to improve operational
  • Selects contractors and ensures contractor adherence to company
  • Travels to field locations to monitor and participate in operations, as
  • Complies with all the Company’s Safety and Environmental policies, practices and programs. Takes corrective action within training limitations. Escalates as
  • Participates in and adheres to all training programs designed to enhance EH&S knowledge and safety standards.
  • Collaborates with both the operational and EH&S team to effectively meet area and departmental EH&S
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education, Certificates, Licenses

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other related
  • California Registered Professional Engineer preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License


  • 12+ years of experience in a drilling operations
  • Previous supervisory experience

Work Environment

This role works primarily in a non-office environment. In this capacity, incumbents are regularly:

  • Exposed to outdoor elements such as extreme heat or cold, heavy winds, rain, or
  • Exposed to loud noise level elements
  • Required to drive to and access job sites, in light of day as well as in darkness, to perform work assignments. Some job site locations may be remote from the office requiring long drives to locations isolated from interaction with others and
  • Required to balance, bend, squat, crouch, climb, reach, grasp, stoop, kneel, push/pull and lift objects, and use apparatus to push/pull and lift heavy objects weighing 50 lbs or
  • Subject to exposure to hazards such as but not limited to slippery or uneven surfaces; environmental/industry hazards such as chemicals, high-decibel noise from production equipment, fumes, or poor ventilation; proximity to moving objects and vehicles; potentially combustible components; hazardous off- road conditions such as dust, ice, and
  • May be requested to work long hours to complete job
  • May work a rotating schedule, shift, and/or be on
  • Follow all company safety policies and
  • Required to perform active, physical tasks including but not limited to operating equipment and/or machinery and making adjustments and
  • Required to have visual acuity to work with parts, equipment, apparatus,
  • Required to possess audible acuity to hear alarms in the event of emergency. field
